Old Walcountians got their promotion campaign back on track with a seven-try drubbing of Teddington.

Injuries to key players forced Walcountians to make several positional changes with Jonny Evans and Remy Claustres, normally props, moving to the back row and James Henderson, normally a scrum-half, playing on the wing. However, the Counts pack, firmly anchored by young tyro Callum Tilleray and gnarled veteran Paul Harris in the front row, imposed their authority on the match from the kick-off and dominated possession.

The first half was frustrating for Walcountians as a stubborn Teddington defence kept them at bay. It was not until the final 10 minutes of the first half that the Counts found a way through when fly-half Harry Wrightson opened up the Teddington defence with a scintillating break and put centre Ross Norton in for a try.

The second half saw Walcountians successfully convert possession into points as they overran the visitors. The first score was a repeat of the first half score with Harry Wrightson once again opening up Teddington’s defence to put Ross Norton in for his tenth try of the season. Norton added two more points with a conversion.

Walcountians’ third score came from burly No8 Remy Claustres who touched down after Walcountians drove Teddington back over their line from a 5-metre scrum and dived on the ball as it squirted out of the grip of the Teddington full-back.

Stand-in winger James Henderson then scored the first of two tries after flanker Ed Bellringer was first to pick up a clever chip kick by scrum-half Seb Chmielinski, from which he put Henderson clear to score.

With Teddington now on the run, Walcountians went in for the kill and finished the match with three more tries. The first came from Harry Wrightson who was put clear after an explosive break by Ed Bellringer. The next came from replacement Dharshan Vadivelu who went over in the right hand corner. The final try of the day came from James Henderson who went over in the right hand corner for his second try of the day.

Walcountians have held onto second place in Surrey League 1 which has now become an increasingly tight battle between four teams with Law Society maintaining a narrow lead and Kingston and Trinity also closing in. The Counts have next Saturday off and do not return to action until 15 February when they take on Old Whitgiftians. Kick-off at Croham Road, South Croydon is at 2:30pm.
