The Counts were apprehensive about taking on the League leaders following a growing injury list and they lost the services of hooker Rob Fleming during the warm-up through a recurring knee injury. They had to make a hurried change with No8 Tom Brown switching to hooker and flanker Andy le Masurier coming off the bench to play. Despite this, it was Walcountians who made all the early running as they took the match to the League leaders.
However, proceedings were brought to a halt in the third minute when the referee tripped over the legs of one of the Petersfield players as he was running to keep up with a Walcountians threequarter move, and sustained an accidental boot to the head. Although the two physios patched him up, he was not in a fit state to continue officiating and, in the absence of a suitably-qualified referee to take over, there was no alternative but to abandon the match.
The RFU is currently deciding when the match should be replayed. Next Saturday, Walcountians are on the road when they travel to take Old Georgians at St George’s College, Addlestone. Kick-off is at 2:30pm.
