OWs get the blues as relegation threat grows

Walcountians took charge of the game in the opening 10 minutes and looked like they had recovered the form they showed in winning the Surrey Under-21 Plate last season. From the kick-off, they relentlessly drove the visitors back towards their own line and went ahead in the ninth minute when flanker Joe Henderson looped round to join a threequarter break and force his way through the Blues defence to touch down.

That proved the high point of the afternoon for Walcountians who spent the rest of the game on the back foot as the visitors adapted to the cold and blustery conditions far better. Only Henderson and Luke Raynor, switched from his normal position of prop to No 8, showed any significant resistance.

Walcountians defended tenaciously in the first half and were two points up at the break. However, they lost that lead in the opening minute of the second half when they lost the ball in midfield and were caught out as the Blues scrum-half raced away to touch down for an opportunist try.

Worse was to follow for Walcountians as Blues took advantage of another turnover to fly-hack the ball forward, from which their left-winger won the race to the line. This try was converted to give Blues a ten point lead.

The final blow for Walcountians came in the 16th minute of the second half when Blues’ open-side flanker broke from the back of a ruck close to the Walcountians line and powered his way through the defensive wall to score a converted try.

Walcountians have six matches to avoid a second successive relegation. Next Saturday, they take on Guildfordians at Clock House, kicking off at 2:30pm.
