Injuries and unavailabilities forced Walcountians to improvise, with both current and former captain Joe Henderson and Callum Tilleray unavailable and Hal Mogridge, normally a full-back taking the key playmaker role at fly-half. The opening ten minutes saw Walcountians stretched by a fluent Amplefordians backline, and failure to make the first tackle count proved costly when the home side’s winger, Charlie Prest, recovered from an attempted tackle and crossed for a try to give them the lead.
Walcountians however responded well, with the pack taking the game aggressively to Amplefordians. Outstanding performances from hooker Jamie Blackmore, prop James Ford and lock Dom Bell saw the Counts drive Amplefordians back into their own 22, while half-backs Hal Mogridge and James Bacon were the springboard for some searching breaks by the backs, with full-back Marvin Fletcher-Rogers looking particularly dangerous when breaking from deep positions.
The Counts drew level in the 20th minute when centre Andy Togbolah took an offload from flanker Jim Harding and broke the Amplefordians’ defensive line for his seventh try of the season. Seven minutes later, they took the lead for the first time when a fluid threequarter move started by the elusive Hal Mogridge put blockbusting winger Olly Sanders over for a try.
Amplefordians rallied in the closing minutes of the first half and held a three-point lead at half-time through a penalty from scrum-half Ludovic Milne and a try from lock Phil Carlstroem.
Walcountians made the stronger start to the second half and Olly Sanders was unlucky not to score his second try of the day when he forced Amplefordians into a state of panic as they tried to field a searching diagonal kick from Hal Mogridge. However, they retook the lead three minutes later. The introduction of hard-scrummaging veteran Ben Anderson into the front row saw Walcountians shunt the home side’s pack ten metres back towards their own line, from which a ruck developed and the "People's Champion" Dom Bell picked up and crashed over for a try converted by James Bacon.
Amplefordians were not finished and regained the lead in the 29th minute when winger Hector Panday offloaded to centre Tom Osborne as he was tackled, putting him clear for a try. But it was Walcountians who had the final word two minutes from full-time when centre Leon Redwood burrowed his way over for a try from a ruck on the home side’s line, James Bacon adding a second conversion.
Although Walcountians dropped a place to seventh, they are now over twenty points clear of the two bottom clubs and look like consolidating their position in Counties League 2 Surrey. Next Saturday, Walcountians are due to play Purley John Fisher in their final League fixture of 2025. Kick-off at Clock House, Carshalton Road, Woodmansterne is at 2pm.
