OWs stampede to victory against weakened PJF

OWs stampede to victory against weakened PJF

Rob Murphy20 Dec - 17:42

Old Walcountians demolished local rivals Purley John Fisher in a hurriedly-rearranged friendly after the intended League fixture was awarded to the Counts as a walkover due to the visitors being unable to raise a full side.

As Purley John Fisher had only 12 players available, the two clubs agreed to play the match as a 12-a-side fixture.
Walcountians had their strongest side out for some weeks and wasted little time in opening up a lead against a brave but outgunned Purley John Fisher. They ran in two tries in the opening 10 minutes as the pack, with Jamie Blackmore, James Ford and debutant Sven Andersson all prominent in driving play forward. The first came from full-back Hal Mogridge whose outside break left the visitors gasping for air as he raced round them. The second came from Sven Andersson who ran onto an offload from Olly Sanders and forced his way over the Purley John Fisher line. Fly-half Matt Hodgson converted both tries.

The one-way traffic continued for most of the first half. Walcountians showed they could recover from mistakes when, in the 23rd minute, Hal Mogridge scored his second try by recovering a misdirected pass and launching a grubber kick, which he won the race to. The second came within two minutes of the restart following a bullocking run by prop James Ford, from which a ruck formed which the Counts won and released the ball to Matt Hodgson to go over for his first try of the day.

Walcountians would have had a further try had winger Andy Togbolah held onto a pass with the tryline at his mercy. However, Togbolah made amends when he set up Hal Mogridge for his third try in the 30th minute.

As Walcountians threw on replacements, the second half initially looked like a repeat of the first, and another debutant, centre Juan Cabeza-Sisa got on the scoresheet after just five minutes as his superbly-angled run split open the Purley John Fisher defence as he raced over for a try.
However, Purley John Fisher did not lack spirit and, in the 10th minute, they opened their account with a converted try from a tap penalty move.

The shock of conceding a try jolted the Counts back into action, and three quick tries followed. The first two came from another debutant, prop Lucas Dore, who broke all the rules of the front row union by scoring two tries in as many minutes. The first, in the 15th minute, saw him turn up on the right wing to support a break by Marvin Fletcher-Rogers, from which he took the return pass and sprinted over the Purley John Fisher tryline to score. Two minutes later, he popped up on the left wing to support the Walcountians threequarters and ran in to score after taking another return pass. A minute later, it was the turn of Fletcher-Rogers to score after taking an offload from Olly Sanders and burning off the Purley John Fisher defence.

Purley John Fisher got a deserved second try in the 21st minute after a forward drive set up the position, but it was Walcountians who had the final word just before full-time when Matt Hodgson scored his second try from a tap penalty move.

Walcountians have moved up to fifth place in Counties League 2 Surrey at the halfway stage and are optimistic about making further improvement in the New Year when injury-hit absentees are expected to return. Indeed, many may have to fight to regain their place in the team. Walcountians’ next match is on 10 January when they take on Bec Old Boys, who are one of four teams fighting for promotion. Kick-off at Field View, Earlsfield, is at 2pm.
