Battling Counts narrowly lose in 12-try thriller

Battling Counts narrowly lose in 12-try thriller

Rob Murphy7 Mar - 20:27

Old Walcountians were edged out in the dying minutes of a close match against Old Blues that they had threatened to win.

Walcountians and Blues exchanged penalties in the opening 10 minutes and there was little to separate two well-matched sides. The Counts pack, with James Ford and Dom Bell leading the cavalry charge and the back row of Joe Harrison, Tony French and Sam Charnock energetically foraging for the ball, put in a sterling display and, had the passing in the backs been smarter, the Counts may have won.

It was Blues who took the lead in the 19th minute when centres Gus Freeman and Alex Satterfield rode two thumping tackles from the Walcountians backline to put full-back Freddie Freeman clear for a try.

Walcountians regained the lead in the 27th minute when lock Dom Bell smashed his way over for a try after taking an offload from a ruck on the Blues line, but this lasted for barely a minute. Blues winger Dave Adenji beat Walcountians to the ball after the restart and released No 8 Kachi Udokporo to run in for a converted try and, five minutes later, Blues were twelve points up after centre Alex Satterfield exploited a temporary shortage of players while winger Olly Sanders was being treated for a wrist injury and sped through a yawning gap in the Counts defence to score his team’s third try of the day.

Walcountians were however determined to claw their way back into the game and scored two tries either side of half-time to level the score. The first came from energetic No 8 Sam Charnock who forced his way over for a try in the final minute of the first half. The second came 10 minutes into the second half when the Counts launched a threequarter move from a tap penalty and centre Andy Togbolah offloaded to winger Michael Beaubrun who ran in to touch down. And the 19th minute of the second half saw the Counts take the lead when they were awarded a penalty try after Blues scrum-half Alex Heath deliberately knocked on to prevent George Charnock putting Olly Sanders in for a try.

The final 20 minutes were dominated by Blues who started to drive Walcountians back to their own line as their biggest forwards Lawrence Richmond, James Peacock and Kachi Udokporo began to dominate the collisions and provide a platform for their pacy threequarters. Two tries, one from a tap penalty, the other by centre Gus Freeman from a second-phase threequarter move, put Blues back in the lead.

Walcountians were far from finished and when the "People's Champion", Dom Bell scored his second try of the day in the 40th minute, it appeared to have won the match for them. But as the match went into stoppage time, Blues scored twice more through James Peacock and Gus Freeman to seal victory.

There is now a week’s gap before Walcountians resume their League campaign. On 21 March, the Counts face OH Exiles at their home ground, Clock House in Carshalton Road, Woodmansterne. Kick-off is at 3pm.
