The first half was a fairly even contest between two well-matched sides. It was Walcountians who drew first blood in the opening five minutes when giant winger Olly Sanders crashed over for a try in the corner. However, within minutes, the Counts found themselves behind as Amplefordians ran in a converted try.
Walcountians were back in front after 10 minutes when an attempted clearance kick was charged down and presented centre George Charnock with an easy run-in for a try, and a well-worked threequarter move set up Olly Sanders to rise an attempted tackle and go over for his second trey in the 22nd minute. But a moment of carelessness gave the visitors the opportunity to retake the lead in the 36th minute after they intercepted a pass near the Walcountians’ 10-metre line and ran in a try. It took another blockbusting run from Olly Sanders to set up George Charnock for his second try of the day just before the break and to give the Counts a narrow five-point lead at half-time.
The second half saw Walcountians transformed as they put Amplefordians to the sword. The pack achieved total mastery over their opponents and, although Amplefordians held out for the first 20 minutes of the second half, the dam finally broke in the last quarter. The first score came in the 22nd minute when scrum pressure gave the Counts No 8 Andy Togbolah the opportunity to pick up at the base of the scrum and dive over for a try.
The final 10 minutes saw a rampant Walcountians run in four more tries. Rampaging winger Olly Sanders was once again involved as he punched a massive hole through the Amplefordians defence and offloaded to centre Ben French to touch down in the 30th minute. Five minutes later, prop Dom Bell was on hand to run in his eighth try of the season, and Bell was on hand to set up replacement Joe Henderson for a try on his first appearance back after a long lay-off for injury. The final try came as the match moved into stoppage time. George Charnock cleverly wrong-footed the Amplefordians defence with a delayed pass which saw Olly Sanders once again stampede his way through the visitors’ defence to set up a ruck, from which Andy Togbolah offloaded to replacement hooker Jamie Blackmore to run in and touch down.
Even with over 50 points on the board, Walcountians were hungry for more scores and, five minutes into stoppage time, fly-half Matt Hodgson banged over a penalty to conclude the rout.
Walcountians have now moved above local rivals Chipstead into fourth place in Counties League 2 Surrey. They have two matches left, the first being next Saturday against Purley John Fisher. Kick-off at Parsons Pightle, Coulsdon, is at 3pm.
